How to thrive in a complex world: the role of systems thinking

31/03/2021
By Ian Jeffreys
ABSTRACT

This article introduces systems thinking as an alternative to traditional linear approaches in strength and conditioning. Ian Jeffreys argues that S&C practice operates within complex environments where physiological, biomechanical, technical, tactical and behavioural factors continually interact. As a result, analysing individual components in isolation may fail to explain why apparently well-designed training interventions do not always produce the expected outcomes.

Systems thinking encourages coaches to move beyond simple cause-and-effect relationships and consider how different elements interact within the wider performance system. Rather than assuming that improving an isolated fitness variable will automatically enhance sporting performance, coaches should consider context, athlete behaviour, adherence and the potential consequences of changes elsewhere in the system.

The article also highlights the importance of identifying key leverage points, recognising that relatively small changes can have substantial positive or negative effects. Coaches are encouraged to consider performance as a web of interconnected factors rather than a collection of independent components. This approach acknowledges uncertainty, individual variation and the absence of universally optimal solutions, helping coaches make more adaptable and context-specific decisions.
