From soldier to strength and conditioning professional: The development of a training philosophy

01/09/2020

Jonpaul Nevin

ABSTRACT

Strength and conditioning (S&C) is frequently described as both an art and a science; however, the increasing emphasis on sport science within the profession may risk diminishing the importance of coaching practice. This article outlines the development of a training philosophy shaped by vocational and academic education, extensive coaching experience and 15 years of military service. The philosophy is presented as a dynamic framework designed to guide professional practice and optimise athlete development. Key components include the promotion of clearly defined values and standards, the creation of a positive autonomy-supporting coaching environment, an emphasis on the fundamental principles of training, the application of evidence-based training methodologies and the development of both mental and physical resilience. Concepts such as self-determination theory, block periodisation, velocity-based training and adaptive coaching are discussed within the context of enhancing athlete performance, well-being and long-term development. The article argues that effective S&C practice requires the integration of coaching expertise and scientific evidence, rather than prioritising one over the other. By sharing an example of a personal training philosophy, the article encourages practitioners to critically reflect on their own beliefs, experiences and approaches in order to develop a coherent framework to support professional decision-making and athlete success.
