Evaluating the constraints led approach and its application within strength and conditioning

04/12/2020

Jack Heimann

ABSTRACT

This article evaluates the constraints-led approach (CLA) and its potential application within strength and conditioning coaching. The CLA proposes that athletes develop effective movement solutions through interaction with task, environmental and performer constraints, allowing movement to emerge through self-organisation rather than relying primarily on explicit technical instruction. Grounded in ecological dynamics, the approach aims to create representative coaching environments that encourage athletes to become more adaptable and independent learners.

The article contrasts CLA with traditional coach-centred S&C methods, including explicit instruction and part-task coaching. It suggests that highly prescriptive approaches can increase reliance on the coach and may limit skill retention, decision-making and performance under pressure. In comparison, CLA places greater emphasis on exploration, variability and athlete-centred problem solving, with the coach manipulating constraints to guide athletes towards effective movement solutions.

Practical applications are explored within weight-room coaching, particularly the power clean. Examples include manipulating the environment or equipment to influence bar path, body contact and landing position without prescribing the movement solution directly. Although research specifically examining CLA within S&C remains limited, the article concludes that the approach has the potential to promote deeper learning, improved skill retention and better performance. It encourages S&C coaches to creatively design, test and implement constraints-led methods alongside the continued development of coaching pedagogy.
