A problem-solving process to identify the origins of poor movement
Louis Howe
Ensuring athletes possess competent movement patterns during training is commonly the sole responsibility of the strength and conditioning professional. Poor mechanics have been shown potentially to lead to injury and suboptimal function in athletic populations. Therefore, identifying the cause of any movement discrepancy is of primary importance in order to facilitate athletic performance. Using a constraints-based approach, this article discusses a theoretical process that may support a coach’s practice in isolating the source of the movement fault. Through identifying this cause, coaches will be able to develop effective training interventions aimed at improving movement quality in their athletes
