‘In a dark time the eye begins to see’: these words by American poet Theodore Roethke eloquently highlight how, in times of great despondency and despair, we can ironically identify ways of seeing that may be beneficial when the darkness lifts. With the current coronavirus situation we are undoubtedly in dark times, or – as Dylan Thomas might say – we have encountered ‘a spring … starless and bible black’.
