Why you should consider standing for the UKSCA Board of Directors

13/08/2025

Every year, the UKSCA invites Accredited members to step forward for election to its Board of Directors. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of the profession and in 2025, three key positions are open:

  • Director of Communications
  • Director of Professional Standards
  • Director of Education and Training (post-ASCC)

We know that for some, putting yourself forward for a Board position might feel like something you’ll “do later” in your career. You may be thinking: I’m not senior enough yet or I don’t know if I have the time. However the truth is, Board roles are not reserved for a select few, they are for committed professionals who care about the direction of the profession, and who can bring their perspective, energy and skills to the table.

THE VALUE FOR YOU

Serving on the Board is an incredible professional development opportunity. It will:

  • Broaden your strategic thinking and leadership skills You’ll contribute to decisions that set the direction for the UKSCA, from shaping education pathways to influencing national policy on coaching standards
  • Expand your professional network in meaningful ways Board work regularly brings you into contact with leaders from sport, academia, the military, schools, and health sectors, creating opportunities for collaboration and career growth
  • Give you a voice in shaping policy, education, and standards in S&C Whether it’s refining the Chartered status process or developing post-ASCC CPD frameworks, you’ll help define what best practice looks like for the profession
  • Offer insight into how a national professional body operates You’ll gain first-hand experience in governance, budgeting, and strategic planning, skills you can transfer to other leadership roles inside and outside your work
  • Learn to work effectively with people who see things differently You’ll develop the ability to present your ideas clearly to colleagues with a wide range of professional backgrounds, perspectives, and priorities, while also building the diplomacy to find common ground and move decisions forward
  • Work beyond your job title While each role has a specific remit, you’ll also collaborate with fellow Board members on a variety of projects suited to your skills, passions, and experience. From events and partnerships to research and advocacy
  • Enhance your professional profile Serving on the UKSCA Board signals to employers, clients, and peers that you’re engaged at the highest level of the profession
  • Challenge and develop yourself You’ll learn to navigate diverse opinions, make complex decisions, and balance long-term vision with immediate priorities – all within a collaborative, mission-driven team.

“It’s not about everyone agreeing all the time – it’s about learning to listen, adapt, and still stand by your principles. That’s one of the biggest skills I’ve taken from my time on the Board.”

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE MONEY (OR LACK OF IT!)

Board positions are not paid roles (but expenses are paid!). This is deliberate, they are volunteer posts, in line with the governance of most professional associations. Your reward is not a salary but the opportunity to influence the profession, make a tangible impact on the careers of others, and build your own capabilities in a unique environment.

“It’s one of the few roles where your motivation is 100% the mission. That’s powerful and it’s what keeps the Board focused on what matters most: the members and the profession.”

YOU CAN DO IT - EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU CAN'T

Some of the most impactful Board members in the UKSCA’s history didn’t see themselves as “Board material” at first. They were coaches, educators, or practitioners who simply cared deeply about the profession and wanted to make a difference.

“I thought you had to have decades of experience or be in a high-profile role. I quickly learned that what matters is commitment, a willingness to learn, and bringing your unique perspective to the table.”

If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved with the UKSCA, this is the moment to take that step.

HOW TO APPLY

Nominations are open now until midnight, 1 September 2025. Accredited members can stand for up to two roles.

Full details are in the election announcement here.
